Test Code ASM Anti-Smooth Muscle AB
Clinical Indications
Test Method: Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA)
High titers of anti-smooth muscle (ASM)
antibodies are often detected in patients with auto-immune chronic
active hepatitis and lower titers may occur with viral infections
and malignancies.
Additional Test Codes
Epic Order Code: Anti-Smooth Muscle AB
Sunquest Order Code: ASM
Px Order Code: LAB2074
Specimen Collection Type
Serum
Preferred: Gold top (SST gel
separator)
Acceptable: Red top (serum tube)
Allow blood to clot at room temp (18-24°C). Serum should be
separated from the clot ASAP to minimize
hemolysis.
Minimum Collection Volume
0.3 mL
Reference Range
<20
Critical Value

Interpretation
Negative: <1:20
Positive: >1:20
ASM titer is performed from 1:20 to
1:1280 dilutions.
Antibody titers >1:80 occur commonly in patient with autoimmune
hepatitis. Lower titers (usually <1:80) may occur in patient
with chronic viral hepatitis and malignancies.
A negative result does not exclude a diagnosis of autoimmune
hepatitis.
Rejection Criteria
Gross hemolysis
Gross lipemia
