Clinical Indications

Test Method: Crithidia luciliae Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA)

The detection and quantitation of anti-double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) is considered diagnostically and therapeutically helpful in patients suspected of or known to have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). High levels of anti-dsDNA are most often seen in active SLE.

Specimen Collection Type

Serum
Preferred: Gold top (SST gel separator)
Acceptable: Red top (serum tube)

Allow blood to clot at room temp (18-24°C). Serum should be separated from the clot ASAP to minimize hemolysis.

Interpretation

Negative: <1:10
Positive: >1:10

A dsDNA titer is performed from 1:20 to 1:1280 dilutions.

A negative result does not exclude a diagnosis of SLE. Positive results may occur in patients with diseases other than SLE.
