Test Code FUNGB Culture-Fungal, Blood w/Sensitivity
Clinical Indications
Test Method: Blood is inoculated into Isolator (Wample) tubes,
lysed to release intracellular organisms, and centrifuged. The
sediment is plated onto solid fungal media.
This technique is the most sensitive method for the recovery of
dimorphic fungi (e.g., Histoplasma capsulatum) and
filamentous fungi (molds) from blood.
Fungaemia due to most yeasts (e.g., Candida species,
Cryptococcus species) will grow in routine aerobic blood
cultures; the lysis-centrifuge technique is unnecessary for the
recovery of these organisms.
