Tissue, respiratory, urine, body fluids, specimens submit in
sterile container.
Use culture transport swab (sponge or gel) for ear, throat,
vaginal, and wound specimens.
Inoculate corneal scrapings directly on to SAB media.
Minimum Collection Volume
Body fluid: 1 mL
Respiratory specimen: 1.5 mL
Tissue: pea-sized piece
Urine: 1 mL

Interpretation
Positive cultures of yeast and fungi are reported with organism
identification.
Fungi can be pathogens, colonizers, or contaminants. Correlation of
patient clinical condition with culture results is necessary.
Negative cultures will be held for 4 weeks before a final negative
report. Cultures of vaginal sources will be held for 7 days.

Catheter tips
Stool specimens
Skin scrapings, nails, or hair specimens collected for the
identification of dermatophytes should be ordered as FUNGS.
For fungal culture of blood or bone marrow, FUNGB should be ordered.
