Test Code MGENU Mycoplasma genitalium, Ribosomal RNA, Qualitative on Urine Specimens
Clinical Indications
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually-transmitted bacterium belonging to the class Mollicutes. It lives on the epithelial cells of the urinary and genital tracts of men and women. In high-risk populations it has a prevalence of 9% to 24% in men and 11% to 16% in women. M. genitalium infection can go unrecognized as either asymptomatic or have symptoms similar to other sexually transmitted diseases. M. genitalium is difficult to culture, the CDC recommends the use of NAATs for detection. M. genitalium has a macrolide resistance rate between 44-90%. Macrolide Resistance testing is not currently available at TUKHS, please see https://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment-guidelines/mycoplasmagenitalium.htm for treatment guidelines
